| East River-Guided Fly Fishing | Join a former fly fishing guide on the beautiful East River near the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery for a relaxed, beginner‑friendly fly fishing experience designed just for COSA attendees. Participants will head to a public access point to learn the basics of fly fishing, including fundamental casting techniques, reading the water, and understanding river etiquette. We will also casually discuss some of the everyday challenges of managing a popular public fishery, the primary focus of this session is to get outside, learn a new skill, and enjoy the river. No prior fishing experience is necessary, and experienced anglers are welcome as well. $10 fee | $10.00 | |
| Aquatic Insects for Fly Fishing and Riparian Ecosystems Clinic | Join Westfeather guides for a hands-on exploration of the aquatic insects that drive river ecosystems that fuel some of the best fly fishing opportunities in Colorado. Participants will collect, identify, and sort aquatic insects from the Slate River into their respective families while learning about their life cycles and ecological importance. We will discuss how these insects fit into the broader riparian ecosystem and examine the relationships between water quality, habitat, and aquatic biodiversity. Participates will then compare the natural insects they find to artificial fly patterns used in fly fishing. Through demonstrations and discussion, participants will learn how anglers imitate different insect life stages and use specific techniques to match what fish are feeding on throughout the year. | Helping Hands at Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery | Volunteers will support hatchery operations by clearing brush to improve access, maintain grounds, and improve facilities. It’s hands‑on work that makes an immediate, visible impact on a place that supports local wildlife and healthy waterways. | RMBL: 98 years of place based science | The Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) is located just up the road in Gothic, CO. RMBL is an active field station, conference center, and host to youth through adults for science camps to history tours. Research began in 1919, with RMBL officially being founded in 1928. It has protected research sites with some of the longest standing research about local ecosystems, now informing larger questions about healthy ecosystems and climate change. This tour will meet at RMBL's Visitor's Center and you will join their staff to learn about past and present research and education efforts. | Self Guided Mountain Biking-Expert | The expert‑level loop starts just south of Crested Butte at Baxter Gulch and climbs steeply out of the trailhead before connecting with the Carbon Trail. From there, you’ll traverse roughly 3.5 miles of rugged singletrack until reaching the junction with Green Lake, where a left turn leads to the final push toward the high‑alpine lake. The descent down Green Lake trail delivers a fast, technical ride all the way back into town. With nearly 3,000 feet of climbing and sustained challenging terrain, this route is a serious undertaking for strong riders looking for a demanding, rewarding mountain bike adventure. | Self Guided Hiking - Beginner or Advance | Pick your hiking adventure! Judd Falls & Copper Creek Trail are the same trail. Judd Falls goes for 1.5 miles from the trailhead and is one of Crested Butte’s best fall hikes. It starts about 6.5 miles north of Mt. Crested Butte on Gothic Road. The Judd Falls portion of the route will take you on a rocky (but not steep) trail through a large aspen grove. Gaps in the trees provide a stunning view of fall foliage on the eastern side of Gothic Mountain. The Copper Lake stretch will take hikers past the Judd waterfall for those looking for a more challenging hike that will top out at a beautiful mountain lake. | Adaptive Sports in Action: Facility Tour & Demo Experience | The Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte "enriches the lives of people with disabilities and other specific needs through exceptional outdoor adventures" (ASC Mission). They offer summer and winter activities and professional instruction where people with any kind of disability can hike, bike, try a challenge course, water sports, rock climb, ski, snowboard and/or snowshoe. They are located in the base area of Crested Butte. Staff on hand will give COSA participants a tour of the facility, then learn about adaptive equipment and programming through indoor climbing (on a wall) and trying out an adaptive bike (on a mini-course). | Plant the Seed! Partnerships and Volunteerism Grow Native Plant Materials Information Session & Hands-on Activity | Are you looking for a conference homebase option during the field-trip offerings on Tuesday afternoon, then we have the right fit for you! Allow Maggie Gaddis the Executive Director of the Colorado Native Plant Society and others to lead you through the story of the development of the Colorado Springs native plant-focused horticulture program, the JCPOS Native Plant Growth Study, and Jefferson County's Native Plant Materials Program development. The story involves over one hundred volunteers in two counties, who collected and planted native seeds, grew the plants in the COS greenhouse and planted them in a restoration site on JCPOS North Table Mountain, where they monitored their growth.
