Wednesday, August 13, 2025
2:30 PM - 3:15 PM
Home visiting providers play a critical role in supporting newcomer families navigating the unique challenges of resettlement and integration into our country. Knowing the important role that Michigan Public Health Institute plays in supporting home visiting providers across the state, they were approached to explore and address quality services for these families.
The Refugee Systems of Care Project was designed to:
- Learn about the needs of home visiting providers
- Learn about how home visitors connect to newcomer support programs
- Increase referrals to home visiting programs
- Develop supports and resources for home visiting providers to optimize their services to newcomer families.
Findings from interviews with Healthy Families America and Parents as Teachers providers across the country elevated the unique challenges home visitors face when serving newcomer families, such as supporting basic needs, navigating complex systems and healthcare, balancing language access and offering culturally responsive services. Key components of the project, including take aways from these interviews will be shared. Presenters will share next steps for this project, including Michigan’s efforts to build system-wide supports that address critical gaps, strengthen services, and improve outcomes for newcomer families. The session will explore how these efforts can serve as a model for broader, national initiatives. Join us as we reflect on our journey, share lessons learned, and discuss strategies for building support systems that enhance services and outcomes across the country.
