Parental substance use, more notably, opioid use disorder continues to be a leading factor contributing to families entering the child welfare system and children entering foster care. In 2023, Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky received grant funding to identify and explore the gaps between Opioid Use Disorder and child abuse and neglect prevention. Not only were gaps recognized through research analysis, statewide needs assessment and cohort of subject matter experts, but “lessons learned” were identified specific to educational programming and community awareness. This workshop will explore the implications of messaging and education surrounding substance use disorder among families and the ways we can shift our lens and approach to decrease stigma among communities, service providers and families seeking services. While many barriers were identified in this work, this presentation will share concrete steps taken to build upon strengths, existing collaboratives and programs while elevating the voice of lived experiences throughout the process.
