1F: Panel Discussion: Cultural Resource Management within a Natural Resource World

Monday, October 6, 2025, 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM

You don’t know what you don’t know, but this can put cultural resources at risk. How do you manage cultural resources within land management agencies while also working to protect natural resources and open spaces? Join Denver Mountain Parks, City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, Fort Collins Natural Areas, and Jefferson County Open Space, for a panel discussion around how different land management agencies approach protecting cultural resources based on different staffing and organizational challenges. The session will present how each agency handles the management and maintenance of cultural resources in combination with natural resources utilizing staff experts, external consultants, and providing in-house training for staff to be advocates while in the field. We will also briefly discuss when agencies must follow certain regulation standards and when it is best practice (including the National Environmental Policy Act; State Register Act; National Historic Preservation Act). Then we will open the discussion to your questions! We will have participants submit questions prior to the session for the panelists to answer, and then we will end the session with an open Q&A.
