6A: Integrated Resource Management: Balancing the Protection of Heritage and Natural Resources

Tuesday, October 1, 2024, 11:15 AM - 12:30 PM

Natural resources managers are often put in the position of managing heritage resources on public lands and open space. At times protection of heritage resources can be at odds with the protection and enhancement of natural resources. Join Denver Mountain Parks, Jefferson County Open Space, and Fort Collins Natural Areas for a discussion around how different land management agencies have grappled with the perceived conflict between natural and heritage resource protection. The session will provide an overview of Integrated Resource Management, summarize the National Register of Historic Places and related federal, state, and local programs, review case studies where cultural and natural resource protection were at odds, and provide criteria for consideration during decision-making around resource protection.
