2A: Outdoor Accessibility through Regional Partnerships

Monday, September 30, 2024, 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM

Collaboration is critical in order to comprehensively advance outdoor accessibility across Colorado’s urban open spaces. Learn how the High Line Canal Conservancy (Conservancy) and other local organizations are working together to increase safe and accessible use of open spaces and trails, including the 71-mile-long High Line Canal (Canal). In this session, you’ll hear from the Conservancy about their work to increase accessibility of the Canal. You’ll hear from accessibility advocate Topher Downham of Omni Accessibility on how his expertise of access to the outdoors is guiding an accessibility audit of the Canal in partnership with CU Boulder. Master of the Environment students will describe the methodology and process to conduct the accessibility audit of the 71-mile urban trail, which will result in an inclusive community-centered guide to access the trail and recommendations for future trail improvements. Then, Craig Hospital will share how they are using outdoor spaces like the High Line Canal to help their patients of varying abilities get outdoors. And to close, the City of Aurora will share about their new Action Trackchair® program that provides all-terrain wheelchairs for users to enjoy open spaces along the trail.
