The factors that make good Improv also create a successful environment for a team or a project. 1) Get ready - In Improv, you don't know what's happening next so preparation means trusting your training, your tools, and your team and then being ready to play. 2) The story - Improv tells a story. The more detail in the story, the more the audience relates - even when most of the details live in the player's head. We as individuals have a story. The business we are working for has a story. We are successful as a team, with a project, when we understand that we are helping build that story. 3) Connect - An Improv story is spontaneous, happens with each random word that comes out of somebody's mouth. Being connected to your scene partner or team means that everybody moves fluidly along the story line. The same is true for work teams and projects. 4) Make your partner look good - An Improv team will have limited success - or a very short run - if one person tries to own the spotlight. The same is true for the team you work with. 5) Know when to edit - When the scene or the concept spins sideways, stalls or hits a wall, it's time to edit. Step back, look for a fresh perspective, a new story line, or build a new relationship. Those things can get a project or team back on track too.
