School-Based Prevention Laws: Why Are They So Hard to Pass?

Thursday, August 14, 2025
10:45 AM - 11:30 PM

This session aligns with the priority of "insights for impact" because it highlights challenges and potential solutions for preventing school-perpetrated sexual abuse through state legislation and implementation. Examples will be provided from various states to show the complexity/nuance involved in these laws, primarily focusing on criminalizing educator sexual contact with students and professional prohibition/discipline of sexual misconduct. Specific advocacy experience from a select number of states will be used to illustrate potential challenges faced across the country. The goal will be to help equip audience members with what to expect as they work within their own states to promote or strengthen this type of legislation.
