PCA America and the Kempe Center have been in place for 55 years. Each organization has had successes in their missions, but nearly two-thirds of 50 professionals working the field of child abuse and neglect for at least 30 years do not believe that children and families are better off (i.e. helped) by the Child Protection System in the US. While they acknowledge progress in many areas, the number of children dying of abuse is unchanged over the past 30 years, in spite of five national commissions and committees that have made recommendations. This session will review the results of those commissions, the survey of the experienced professionals, will describe the impediments to making progress and suggest an approach to changing the status quo that has been successful in many other health and public health conditions.
