Transforming the Narrative: Youth-Led Solutions to Prevent Child Maltreatment in Lane County, Oregon

Tuesday, August 12, 2025
11:00 AM - 11:45 AM

The Center for Childhood Safety and Wellbeing (CSAW) has spent the last year interviewing youth and adults who work with traditionally excluded groups to identify root causes of child abuse, neglect, and identity-based violence in Lane County. Guided by CSAW’s Youth Advisory Council, CSAW has developed a series of recommendations for preventing child maltreatment within the local context and increase youth leadership in child wellbeing initiatives. Through coalition building and ongoing youth input, we continue working to implement these recommendations and leverage existing community resources. This presentation will focus on: - Sharing recommendations developed by CSAW’s Youth Advisory Council to prevent child maltreatment in one Oregon county at individual, relational, community, and systemic levels, - Explaining how these recommendations have informed local strategies for mobilizing resources, - Discussing the importance of accessible youth engagement and how we prioritize creating meaningful opportunities for youth participation and tangible impact, and - Highlighting youth perspectives on breaking the culture of silence, shifting individual norms, fostering community-driven, youth led solutions, and seeing their impact reflected in tangible ways in statewide research, parents, caregiver and teacher education, communications campaigns and more. By elevating youth voices and changing perceptions of child maltreatment as a preventable, public health and social justice issue, we are transforming how communities respond to violence. This session will explore tangible, youth-led strategies for shifting the narrative from intervention to prevention—ensuring every child grows up in a safe and supportive environment. Participants will be invited to imagine how ideas presented can be applied in their own communities. Presenters include both youth and adults.
