7A- Fort Chambers and Addressing Difficult Histories Through Site Design: A Case Study
Wednesday, October 7, 2026, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Elevation Hotel
DESCRIPTION
For less than a year, a hastily constructed sod fort in Boulder served as a training ground for early settlers as they mobilized to fight the perceived threat of Indigenous Tribes. Abandoned quickly after the group’s participation in the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and left to deteriorate, all signs of this fort have since vanished from the landscape. The impact of the events it enabled, however, left a lasting impact on both the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and the City of Boulder. Since 2022, Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks Department has collaborated with Tribal representatives to develop a long-term vision for the Fort Chambers property. Through an overview of the project, explore the history of Fort Chambers and learn about the opportunities governments have to include our Tribal peers in the collective work of addressing difficult, shared histories.
