In child welfare work, it is common to talk about trauma as something that happens to others: the children or families in our care, whether we run agencies, work on the frontline, or take children into our homes. We discuss and work with trauma as if we aren’t also affected by it. In this workshop, we will explore the impact of witnessing trauma on the way we work, the way we are in relationship, and the way we take care of ourselves. We will talk about the impact of witnessing trauma, or vicarious trauma, on our worldview. And we will examine the impact of witnessing trauma on our values, identity, and conscience — moral injury. Come learn or be reminded that there are predictable physiological and psychological impacts of trauma on who we are, how we work, and how we live — and that working in the context of trauma can shift our worldview and sense of self. You’ll leave the workshop with practical applications and tools at the individual and system level.
