Supporting staff development is at the heart of the HFA parallel process. Several years ago a team from Kansas attended a workshop at the PCA national conference on career ladders and used that information to develop a career ladder for their multi-site system. The system includes promotion opportunities for Family Support Specialists based on specific objectives that must be achieved. This first part of this session will provide an overview of the career ladder, including a review of the requirements to meet promotion and expectations once it is achieved. The second part of the session will look at the system the career ladder team has created to utilize staff who have received the promotion to provide intentional shadowing opportunities for new hires. Even if your site is not able to implement a career ladder, you may be interested in learning about the shadowing procedures the team has created. They have developed tips for shadowing a home visit that can be helpful for both the new worker going to shadow an experienced worker and the experienced worker providing the shadowing experience.
