How might we build a shared understanding of a complex societal challenge such as child neglect? How might we transform the narrative and mental models from individual blame to collective responsibility? Through Overloaded: Understanding Neglect, a narrative podcast series from the Institute for Child and Family Well-being, we aspire to build a shared understanding of neglect, its underlying root causes, and how they overload families with stress. Through conversations with national and local experts, we developed a compelling narrative of the realities of overloaded families, so that we might find solutions that reduce family separations for reasons of neglect. Neglect is a complex and wicked problem, but it’s one that we believe is preventable if we work together to reimagine our systems and how we support families overloaded by stress. In this workshop, we will share how we developed our podcast narrative from the foundational research and experience that inspired our Strong Families, Thriving Children, Connected Communities initiative. We will discuss how we built a network of research and policy, direct practice, and lived experience experts to tell a more holistic story to reimagine how we might support overloaded families. We will also share how we believe Overloaded: Understanding Neglect serves as a foundation for future innovations in practice, policy, and systems change. Key learning objectives include: • Develop a holistic narrative that elevates research, policy, practice, and lived experience to build a shared understanding of complex problems. • Act as a field catalyst by engaging strategic partners and audiences to transform and reframe the narrative to challenge and shift mental models. • Elevate local stories, initiatives, and innovative ideas that promote systems change.
