DESCRIPTION

What if the most powerful tool for protecting our parks and open spaces isn't a fence or sign, but a physiological shift in the human brain? Grounded in research findings shared in Dr. Dacher Keltner’s book Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder, this session explores how the outdoors can function as the ultimate engine for collective well-being. We will dive into the science of how awe improves our physical and mental well-being, as well as inspires us to care for the commons. Attendees will learn how to move beyond traditional program design to intentionally "plan for awe," ensuring our public lands remain transformative spaces for a modern, stressed-out world. When we experience awe in nature, we aren't just "using" a park; we are participating in a shared, sacred space. Awe helps make us feel smaller as individuals and more connected to the collective.
