DESCRIPTION
Clear communication and a shared understanding of the landscapes and habitats that define our open spaces are essential to making these areas more enjoyable and engaging for the public. To effectively engage visitors, manage recreation, and build community partnerships, diverse professionals such as environmental educators, rangers, nonprofit partners, and land managers need a common language. The U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) serves as this critical baseline. Released in October 2025, USNVC Version 3.0 offers a consistent 8-level hierarchical framework that now comprehensively includes ruderal (human-disturbed) and cultural (intensively managed) vegetation types commonly found in urban and suburban recreational spaces. Tailored specifically for the broad spectrum of Colorado open space staff, this beginner-friendly session explores how the USNVC's nested hierarchy can bridge the gap between science and public outreach. We will demonstrate how broad classification levels (such as Macrogroups and Formations) can be paired with new tools like Macrogroup Factsheets to explain the ecological value of landscapes in simple terms that enhance the recreational experience. Participants will learn how to translate complex ecological data into a common language to effectively communicate with everyone from third-graders to city council members to citizen scientists.
